Gum Disease Treatment

Gum Disease Treatment

Healthy gums are a sign of healthy teeth. They are one of the prerequisites for maintaining good oral health. Bacterial infection of the tissues in and around the teeth is called Gum Disease. The gums and the alveolar bone provide support to the teeth and help them to stand firm and strong. Gum diseases can lead to loss of teeth as the tooth may fall due to the absence of proper support from the gums. The first sign of decay is the inflammation of the gums called Gingivitis. If left untreated, this leads to bone loss called Periodontitis. Gums become red as a result of swelling and start bleeding when touched.

Causes

A soft sticky layer of bacteria that forms on the surface of the teeth called Plaque is the primary cause of Gum Diseases. Plaque builds up at over a period of time and needs regular cleaning to be removed. Plaque can be caused through a bad oral hygiene; smoking or chewing tobacco; irregular tooth formation which makes cleaning difficult and family history of such diseases.

Symptoms

Many a times the signs of gum diseases are ignored until they start bleeding or when the tooth starts falling. It is better to be alert when you have the following:

  • Inflammation of the gums followed by bleeding
  • Loose teeth; gaps between teeth and gums; receding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Pain while biting or chewing

Treatments

Treatment for Gum Diseases depends on the extent of damage caused to the gums and teeth. Gingivitis is the early stage of decay which can be easily treated through professional cleaning by the dentist. Periodontitis is the advanced stage which needs surgical intervention by a specialist.

The following are the various treatment options:

Scaling of teeth: This involves dental cleaning and removal of plaque by a professional dentist.

Root Planning: It involves removal of the irregularities in the root of the tooth so that plaque does not get accumulated.

Antibiotics/Medicines: Antibiotic gel is placed by the dentist on the affected area after scaling is done. This treatment is effective when the decay is restricted to one or a few teeth that are located together.

Surgery: This is the last resort when all other non-invasive treatments fail to give relief.Flap surgery to stitch the gum back in place; bone grafts and tissue grafts are some of the surgical treatments offered for Gum Diseases.
